Before and After

At my Weight Watchers meeting this past Tuesday a woman that comes week after week hit her one hundred pound weight loss mark. It was a very exciting meeting! We all knew that it has taken her months to lose those last few pounds to reach that goal. As she told her story, I was impressed by her determination and I took note in the parallel between our journeys. Like me, it has taken her a while to lose that weight, one pound at a time. She has had ups and downs along the way and overall it has taken her three years to lose the one hundred pounds.

While she was telling her story, she pulled out a photograph of her former self 100 pounds heavier. She has carried this photo around with her during her weight loss journey these past three years. She agreed to pass it around so that the rest of us may gain inspiration from her amazing journey. The difference was shocking. She did not even look like the same person.

It made me realize that as I am going through my own weight loss and health improvement journey that I do not often stop and take the time to appreciate how far I have come and to notice the difference in my body; especially the changes that have occurred in the muscles and shape of my body from exercise. So I have begun the hunt for my own previous photos. I called my mom to see what she had lying around and I started checking out my old digital photo disks. My goal is to find my own inspiration photograph, especially since I realized this morning when I got on the scale that today, August 9, 2012, I am sixty pounds lighter than my heaviest weight approximately three-four years ago.


I know I still have such a long way to go but taking the time to stop and see that I CAN do it is such an important part of the process and I encourage anyone else who is on this difficult journey to do the same! Have a great day!!

    1. Thanks! I have decided that I am only overcoming the weight thing one time for good. I have tried before and lost 10 lbs here, 20 lbs there but never finished the journey. It is WAY too hard to go all the way and then have to ever do it again! Plus, I don't think I could ever eat like I used to. Yuck.

  3. I am so happy for you! 60 lbs. is an incredible milestone. Anyone who knows you knows you will achieve any goal you set your mind to. Congratulations!!!

    1. Funny you should mention the word "goal". Because I reached my 10% milestone at my meeting this week, I got to set my official WW goal weight with my leader. I set it higher than I planned because well, once I hit my goal weight (there is a big range to choose from) and become a lifetime member, I stop paying to be a member and that is quite a bit of money to save every month! But in the end, I will aim for a 100 lb loss which is a safe and healthy weight for me.

  4. Oh Congrats on the weight loss. I too am aiming for 100 lb weight loss. Actually, I'm aiming for more than that but first things first. Right now I'm down by 75 lbs. 25 lbs to go!

Low Dose Naltrexone

In my last blog entry I discussed my current experiences with an integrative medicine doctor. (Going Down the Road of Integrative Medicine). In that entry, I mentioned a new medication I was prescribed by this doctor called low dose naltrexone (LDN) and I think that it is worthy of its very own blog entry so here we go. Since we have the modern day miracle of Google, I am not going to spend a lot of time describing LDN and exactly how it works, but I think there are some basics that are important. Naltrexone is a medication that was created in the late 1970's as a treatment for heroin overdose and subsequently used in larger doses (50-300 mg) to treat heroin addicts. It blocks the opiate receptors in our body, which are also found on immune system cells. The next discovery, in the 1980's, was that naltrexone at lower doses (hence why it is called low dose naltrexone), blocks these opioid receptors and increases the endorphin level…

Sjogren's and Disability

I have been reading a lot of posts of the Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation Facebook page lately about disability for this disorder. People seem to have a lot of questions and comments not only about the process itself of obtaining disability, but also about the journey which is at best, extremely stressful. My journey with disability began in 2008 when I was put on short term disability through my former employer.
